As I'm sure most of you are already aware,
sga_flashfic is doing a reports challenge: write the report that doesn't get written, or the one that does get written, or - and this is the sticky bit - write somebody else's fic as a report. This has made a lot of people rather angry, largely because the challenge doesn't require writers to ask permission before remixing someone else's fic.
And there's been a lot of discussion about what the rules are, and what they should be, and on and on and on, and meanwhile all I can think is:
Why is this even an issue?
No, I don't think that writers should remix someone's fic without permission, be it specific permission or a blanket "hey, go ahead and stir it up, y'all!" notice. I also don't think that they would. Maybe I'm wrong - maybe I'm projecting my own paranoia and fear of stepping on fannish toes on to the rest of the world - but I really don't think so. In my experience, at least, fandom is a really nice place, full of people who want to get along, and who take steps to avoid pissing each other off. We seem, by and large, to be pretty good with that whole 'common courtesy' thing.
(and if I'm wrong? ...I kind of don't want to know.)
At the same time, I honestly can't imagine saying "no" to someone who wanted to remix something I'd written. Now, clearly I am projecting, when it comes to that, since so many people are so bothered by this challenge, but...I don't know. The whole thing seems rather silly, to me.
Bottom line: Go ahead! Remix my fics! Please! I participated in
remixredux this past year, and absolutely adored it, both the writing and the reading of my rocking awesome remix (Revelations (The Divided Remix), by
panisdead). I think it's really cool when someone is interested enough in what I wrote to re-write it and screw around with it and generally make merry with the ideas I have; I'm entirely aware that I don't always do justice to the things I come up with, and I love seeing other perspectives.
...and, really, this isn't just for the challenge: consider this a blanket permission to remix pretty much anything I ever write. Credit me, of course, and I'd love a link as well, but I'm absolutely OK with you remixing whatever you choose of my work.
