OMG, LJ. OH MY GOD.

So last night I was on IM - well, honestly, I was on IM most of the day, but last night at about 8:30, I started talking to [livejournal.com profile] fox1013. Like I do. And it was fun! Because I said, I want to meta on about summer camp, and [livejournal.com profile] fox1013...enabled. Like she does. So that was fun!

Around 9:30, we got to talking about fannish summer camp AUs, which are - oh my god, people, they are the bread and butter of my very soul. Like - any fic about summer camp is automatically going to my top ten list. Explaining it would take a really long time, and also possibly some strong drink. Just - take it as a given, okay?

And around this time [livejournal.com profile] pearl_o joined the conversation, and we continued on until almost midnight, talking about things like this:

[livejournal.com profile] etben: bsg is a little dark for a summer camp, I feel like?
[livejournal.com profile] pearl_o: heeeeeeee.
[livejournal.com profile] etben: and pushes the same buttons firefly does
[livejournal.com profile] fox1013: *nods* Exactly. It's practically summer camp already
[livejournal.com profile] etben: post-apocalyptic summer camp, maybe
[livejournal.com profile] fox1013: just, you know
[livejournal.com profile] fox1013: summer camp with death
[livejournal.com profile] fox1013: exactly!
[livejournal.com profile] pearl_o: BSG Is the summer camp where EVERYONE DIES AND THE BEARS TAKE OVER ONLY THE BEARS LOOK JUST LIKE YOU.
[livejournal.com profile] etben: lasdfja;ldfkaj
[livejournal.com profile] fox1013: YES
[livejournal.com profile] fox1013: THAT CAMP
[livejournal.com profile] fox1013: ...[livejournal.com profile] pearl_o? Why are you so awesome?
[livejournal.com profile] etben: man, I wish I'd gotten to go to that camp
[livejournal.com profile] fox1013: ME TOO

(yes, we're deranged. WE KNOW, OKAY?)

MY POINT BEING: Dear internets, there are many many fandoms that could use some summer-camp AU loving, but the three of us - awesome though we are - are not equal to this task. It falls to you! Take up the torch! Go to your keyboards and give us some good old summer loving. Snippets are welcomed, as are handwavey outline-type-things - basically, we have a craving and want you to FEED US. (and, obviously, more than one snippet per fandom - or one person writing snippets in many fandoms! - is A-OK by us. We are greedy like that.) Just write it, and link one of us when you do, and we will flail all over you.

But we do not come to you empty-handed! We wrote snippets, too, to seed the ground.

I wrote due South, because [livejournal.com profile] pearl_o is the boss of me.

"Welcome to Turtle Lake River!" The man behind the folding table is a little younger than Ray's dad, fat, starting to go bald above his ears. He sticks out a hand for Ray to shake, beaming and sweating, and Ray hates his entire life.

"You must be Benton!"

"Ray," he says, taking the pen and signing his name on the sign-in sheet. "Kowalski."

"Ray - " The guy frowns and grabs the paper back to read, then nods. "Of course - well, Stanley - Ray - welcome to the Turtle Lake River Camp For Young People!" He goes on, explaining the sign-in stations and where the cabins are. "All the rest of the boys are in their cabins already, of course," he says, "but I'm sure you'll settle in just fine."

Ray's pretty sure he's full of shit, but what the hell.

Things could be worse. He could be named Benton.

When he finally makes it to his cabin, there are two bunks left, back in the corner; Ray picks the top one and starts unpacking his bags without talking to anyone. A few of the guys nod or say hey - kids he recognizes from school or wherever - but mostly they let him be.

Just when he's tucking in his sheets, the door slams shut and the cabin goes silent. Ray doesn't look - he doesn't have to look, he's a tough guy, he can stay here and tuck his corners right if he wants to - but soon enough there's a polite little cough behind him and he turns around.

The guy is taller than Ray, lean and kind of solid-looking. He doesn't look like a fighter, but he looks - heavy. There. Present, like a rock or a wall. His hair is short and dark, and he stares right back at Ray without flinching.

"So you're Benton." It's not a question - nobody else this guy could be, and plus there's the flannel.

Benton nods, then gestures towards the bed below Ray. "May I?"

"Knock yourself out," Ray says, climbing up to lay on his bed and stare at the ceiling.

Could be worse. He could have the bottom bunk, or be named Benton, or both.

GO GO GADGET FANDOM! Write us summer camp AUs! Make my day! (or, um, if we're on some kind of honesty kick, make my life. You don't even understand.)
