i'm not even going to START with the roads.

Heyyyyy internet!

[livejournal.com profile] soundslikej and I have had a VERY EXCITING Saturday, by which I mean that we mostly puttered around the house and flumped on the couch a lot. BUT! We also did some of the household tasks we've been neglecting, which was exciting. ALL OF THE LAUNDRY EVER: done and folded! Christmas tree needles in the hall (which we've been reminding each other about ALL WEEK and then forgetting anyways): swept up!

But in the process, we realized that we have a problem. Now, I call this problem "If we lived in a civilized state with bottle returns in grocery stores, this wouldn't happen."

Jai calls it OH MY GOD THAT'S A LOT OF BOOZE.

I...yeah. (IN OUR DEFENSE, neither of us actually drinks Bud Light With Lime; that's all courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] brooklinegirl and [livejournal.com profile] drlense. Yes, ALL OF IT.)

So we made a voyage to Kappy's and returned...almost all of that? Or, no, the bag of cider didn't go, because we knew from sad experience that they wouldn't take it. But the rest of it was recycled for the (measley $.05, wtf is this state up to, where I come from, fnargle bargle) deposit.

...and then we bought some more, because we're great.

Speaking of amusing regional differences, when we went to get our tree, we saw ads for KISSING BALLS. I loled a LOT, but [livejournal.com profile] soundslikej assures me that this is an actual THING around these parts.

...yeah, I'm stuck on KISSING BALLS. Because I am TWELVE, WHAT.

other adventures in regionalisms: frappes (which are...possibly the same as malts? but possibly just milkshakes) and slush (which is kind of like a sno-cone, I guess? but distinct from a slush-ee. IDK, I just thought it was funny that the gas station convenience store was advertising ICE CREAM AND SLUSH.) and, of course, the epic pie debate. Changing states is fun! And educational!

Hee. It never even occurs to me to do anything with my empties except recycle them, coming from a non-deposit state! Once early on in my New England days, I was impressed with how evangelical small-town Maine was - there were Redemption Centers everywhere!

The kissing balls have been cracking me up, toooo (somehow I never noticed them before, but this year they're everywhere.) Also frappes are definitely milkshakes in my experience (while 'milkshake' I think is just milk and syrup? or a more liquid milkshake? idk, where I come from, we just have milkshakes and malts and concretes.)

Frappes have ice cream, milkshakes don't!

[identity profile] jadis31.livejournal.com 2010-12-11 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow. In New Jersey (the center of all goodly civilization, obviously), milkshakes have ice cream. I'm not sure what they would be without ice cream... other than grossly disappointing.

[identity profile] misspamela.livejournal.com 2010-12-11 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Milkshakes are milk, ice, and syrup; frappes are um...ice cream, ice, and milk? I think? I'm pretty sure that most people in New England are aware that the frappe is a regional oddity and will spell out what they mean on the menu. I could be biased by living in a touristy area, though.

[identity profile] misspamela.livejournal.com 2010-12-11 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, and my state doesn't have deposits OR mandatory curbside recycling. (Only a few towns have it.) Or, you know. Kindergarten.

Heheh. Kissing Balls. I love the world sometimes.

I NEVER KNEW ABOUT KISSING BALLS. CLEARLY, I'VE BEEN MISSING OUT.

I love that, just by the virtue of KNOWING [livejournal.com profile] brooklinegirl and [livejournal.com profile] drlense, you get to be embarrassed by them. The world is a beautiful place! ♥

I LOVE YOU GUYS.

re: the roads: when giving people directions to our apartment, especially if they are not familiar with the way boston does things, we have to emphasize that it's AVENUE, not STREET, and that it's in SOMERVILLE, not MEDFORD or CAMBRIDGE. because of course it's a good idea to put that many identically named roads in a few mile radius!

LOL KISSING BALLS. I always thought that flocking trees was vaguely dirty, but kissing balls sound just so...explicit.

[identity profile] brooklinegirl.livejournal.com 2010-12-12 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
AWWW. our BLL continues embarrassing people even after we drank it! and I applaud you for taking the bottles to be redeemed - I LONG AGO decided I was too fucking lazy and I just put them out early enough on the night before recycling pick-up that the homeless guy comes to get them. I make him REALLY HAPPY on the Sundays after we have a party. \o/?

KISSING BALLS. Greatest, RIGHT?

and FRAPPES. ♥ I really love my weird-ass state.

Wow... Tracey and I drink A LOT. *headdesk*

I can't even get into the whole frappe/milkshake thing.
