media flail!

Hi internet! I...kind of fell off the edge of lj for a while, there - school stuff, mostly, and also a generalized desire to flop on the couch and do nothing. Winter, why must you be the worst? But I have been reading books - some of them with actual pages and things! - and watching movies and TV! And now I will make a post about things that I have enjoyed recently.

1) Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows. DELIGHTFULNESS INCARNATE. I saw this with a huge crowd of fangirls last night, and we were loud and ridiculous and had all of the fun in the world. Every time I thought the movie had reached a new height of ridiculousness, it proved me wrong and became even more absurd. And gay! But mostly I want a million words about Mary Morstan Watson, kicking ass and taking names and smiling serenely.

2) Friends With Kids. Not even gonna lie, I decided we should watch this movie based entirely on a gif of Adam Scott with a small child, and it was an A++++ life decision. I expected it to be a lot more mottsy and terrible than it was, but it was genuinely incredibly charming and adorable. Adam Scott! And a kid! And Jennifer Westfeldt, who I don't think I'd ever seen in anything before, but who I liked tremendously! A+ film, would creep on Adam Scott being a dad again! (Not Adam Smith, as I initially typed. BRAIN WHAT ARE YOU.)

3) Friday Night Lights. SHOWWWWWWWWW. We are halfway through the first season, and pretty much every second of every episode is me flapping my hands and yelling out characters' names. The writing and the acting of this show are just - and the relationships - jfc, so good I can't even handle it. It is a show about football - and I grew up at a Big Ten school, so I can say with some certainty that I am not a football fan, if ever I was gonna be it would have happened a long time hence - and I love this show so much I can't even handle it sometimes. Also I want to form a Tyra Collete Appreciation Society, meetings twice weekly. IN MY PANTS.

4) The Vorkosigan Saga. IDK why I have resisted this series so long, but oh my god, it is DELIGHTFUL and also ridiculous. The amount of cackling in handflappy glee I have done in the past week is absolutely rigoshdarndiculous.

CORDELIAAAAAAAAAA. I love how she is so matter-of-fact and competent and just GETS SHIT DONE ALL OVER THE PLACE. And I just finished Warrior's Apprentice, and oh my god, Miles and the Dendarii hit my "take this rag-tag band of fuckups and miscreants and make them into a team" kink so hard I almost passed out, jfc. RIDICULOUS FAMILY OF SPACE-ADVENTURERS!

And how he just sort of fell into it! Like, "Whoops, raised an army? Sorry?"

Yessssssss. And the way everybody is TOTALLY SOLD on his performance as a mercenary commander, even the people who know for a fact that he isn't. I just. OKAY WELL LET'S GO AND DO THAT THEN.

(also, seriously, CORDELIAAAAAAAA.)

Oh my god, i can't wait for you to read ALL of them. Just, all of them. They get better and better and better.

Wait, Except the next one is kind of a throwaway? IIRC? Totally fun, but not OH MY GOD AMAZING. But they get AMAZING.

1. I haven't seen this yet, but all these posts about it are definitely making me think it would be an A+ life choice.

3. SHOWWWWWWW. I've been watching this too, and, ugh, a lot of it is just so perfect I can't even handle it.

4. I end up re-reading these like twice a year because they are my happy place. Mad Miles foreverrrrrr

1. I mean, I can't exactly say that it's a good movie, but it is absolutely an awesome movie, if that is a distinction that is meaningful to you. Attractive badass ladies! Explosions! Implausible science/medicine/plot! And also that Robert Downey Jr fellow, who is okay I GUESS.

3. a;dlfkajs;flkdsjf;a SO GOOD OH MY GOD. I can't watch more than a few episodes at a stretch because I start having too many feelings and have to go have a nap.

4. Oh my god, seriously, MOST DELIGHTFULLEST. Miles just cracks my shit up, I can't even lie. Yes, sass your bosses! Pretend to be a mercenary commander! THAT CAN'T POSSIBLE END POORLY.

OMG VORKOSIGAN SAGAAAAAAAAAA HOW AMAZING IT IS

What book are you on? What order are you using to read them? How excellent was it when Miles accidentally became admiral of a mercenary fleet? WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE CHARACTER? Do you have opinions about people? DO TELL. *chinhands*

I'm reading them according to internal-chronological order, and right now I am a few chapters into The Vor Game - Miles is alternating being incredibly clever with having very little self-preservation, as he does.

And uggggh, I don't know who is my favorite! Miles, obviously, and also CORDELIA JFC HOW ARE YOU SO GREAT, but also I kind of totally love Aral, who is incredibly smart and stupidly noble and also just cracks my shit up every time he is baffled by Cordelia's existence. BASICALLY EVERYBODY IS GREAT AND I AM EXCITED.

[identity profile] inmyriadbits.livejournal.com 2011-12-22 07:51 am (UTC)(link)
Cool, that's really the best way, IMO. Although, I suggest skipping Falling Free and Ethan of Athos and reading them separately, since they're not really related to the main characters in any important ways. And then there's the Borders of Infinity dilemma: do you read the novellas when they show up on the timeline, or do you wait and read them all when the frame story comes around? (I don't have strong feelings either way, actually.)

Yeah, sorry, that was an evil question! I don't know who I'd pick as my favorite, actually. Cordelia is a badaas. Maybe Ekaterin, but you haven't met her yet, so -- spoilers! Or Simon Illyan, who is a boss, and whom you will really love for sure after Memory, if you don't already. Or Ivan! I love Ivan, I'm so glad she's writing him his own book. :D

heee, I realized when I finally started reading that I actually have a TON of friends who love these books! Basically my feelings are FAMILY OF TOO DAMN CLEVER/HONORABLE FOR YOUR OWN DAMN GOOD, UGH, WHY ARE YOU EVEN.

I was going to ask how far you were and then realized it might be dependent on your reading order so I'll ask what's your favorite so far? If you have one. Or who's your favorite?

I am a few chapters into the Vor Game, going by wikipedia's list of 'internal chronological order' (except I skipped the ones that are pre-Cordelia, on the suspicion that they would make more sense knowing what came later). And I don't know who is my favorite! I basically love Cordelia the most, except for when I am busy loving Miles or Aral the most. FAMILY OF RIDICUMAZING HUMANS.
