avengersverse thoughts and feelings
We are rewatching Thor tonight, as every wonderful household does on a Friday night, and I have THOUGHTS. And FEELINGS.
1. First and foremost, something I never noticed before: right after SHIELD swoops in and steals all of Jane's research, Selvig is trying to talk her down, and he says, "I knew a man, once - an expert in gamma radiation - SHIELD showed up and he was never heard from again."
Now, obviously there's no way to KNOW that he's talking about Bruce Banner, there - but it does make sense! Selvig is an expert in gamma radiation - that's why he was working for SHIELD in the Avengers. When Loki mind-whammied him, SHIELD had to go to their backup guy: Bruce Banner. Given that, plus the tendency that Marvel has to include shout-outs to other parts of the franchise, I am choosing to believe that Erik Selvig and Bruce Banner used to be SCIENCE BROS together, which means that they may yet be SCIENCE BROS again!
(With Tony Stark, obviously, because every story needs some more Tony Stark, and if you disagree with me then I'm sorry but we just can't be friends any more.)
2. I've seen various schools of thought around Tumblr in re: Loki - people seem to split between hating his guts and seeing him as the most tragic of all possible tragic cupcakes. I...disagree with both sides! In that, especially in Thor but in a lesser extent also in the Avengers, I sympathize with his feelings...but not so much with his life decisions. At the beginning of the film, he's clearly devastated to learn that he's the child of ~~the enemy~~, and I don't blame him a bit, because, wow, way to make sure that he learned that at the worst possible time, Odin! And I can see how, growing up, it would have been hard to be consistently passed over for his brother, given how much of a dipshit Thor is at the beginning of the movie. Plus, in the Avengers, Loki consistently looks like 20 miles of bad road, which leads me to believe that some of his decisions have been more a question of "well, I don't really have any good choices here, so I guess I'll just go with...this one?"
...and yet, the extent to which Loki completely fails to respond in a proportionate manner is just - oh honey, no. Therapy! Family counseling, even! Blowing up most of Manhattan: not actually a good life choice.
3. [blah blah thoughts and feelings about Loki and Thor as gods, and the extent to which they are or are not influenced by the expectations of their believers - basically I really need to re-read American Gods before I can figure out what this thought wants to be.]
4. I deeply and sincerely want ONE MILLION WORDS OF FIC about Thor and Jane in the interval post-Thor (or I guess post-Avengers?) where he has to get used to her being, you know, a ridiculous academic nerdball who spends most of her time either a) in her head, b) in a van in the desert, or c) in a shitty office split between four other junior faculty. Like, I'm betting that Jane is sometimes fairly terrible at human interaction!
...and meanwhile, Jane has to adjust to the fact that, in Asgard, Thor is the favored son of the king, all ego and flash and beating shit up with a huge fucking hammer - basically, he's Tony Stark in an even sillier outfit. ADJUSTMENTS ALL AROUND.
5. God damn, Hemsworth really is a blond Heath Ledger, isn't he? HEEEEEEF ;____;
In other news, I'm done with classes! and am guaranteed to graduate! Which means that, with the exception of some interviews and some family shenanigans, the only things I need to do between now and the end of the month are:
• pack for the summer
• put the gd a/c in the window
• write the story about how Tony and Pepper Make It Work (which is also the story about how Stark Tower comes to be, maybe? And might also involve a threesome with Bruce Banner, fuck you, don't judge me.)
• write the ridiculous gen epic about Steve Rogers Discovering The 21st Century, ugh,
angelsaves and
soundslikej are the WORST enablers.
• write about Thor and Jane sleeping with everybody
• write about how everybody sleeps with everybody in the Avengers Mansion, for reasons of plot.
My life choices: actually fairly valid, for a change! If you have thoughts on Thor, or on the Avengers more generally, or if you have things you think I should write, you should come have opinions at me in the comments!

...ALSO okay I want fic where Thor meets Mystique from the X-Men verse and thinks that OMG SHE'S A JOTUN (because they're blue!) and freaks out, and then, idk, Mystique shape-changes at him and owns his ass? there's plot, whatever, I just want Thor being a ridiculous human being, nothing wrong with that.

haha oh man, i don't even care what the plot is as long as there's thor being ridiculous. ...and possibly riding a NOBLE PUG STEED.

(which led to me expounding AT LENGTH in the car today about how Stark Industries, in my head, has had ridiculously progressive policies since forever, because if you're going to trust people with high explosives and code that could take out most of the western world? then you can probably trust them to know who they want to put as their medical proxy. WHAT MY HEADCANON IS PERFECTLY PLAUSIBLE.)

And anyone who judges anyone else for Tony/Pepper/Bruce shall be punished by not being allowed to read it, so say I.

(Although that said, I would read the FUCK out of a story where everybody has always known that Loki was adopted, and he's just being fostered at Asgard because he and Thor will eventually be political-alliance married. How interesting would THAT be? Because then Loki wouldn't ever have to feel betrayed, because all of the cards would have been on the table from the get-go, and also he wouldn't have had a lifetime of being passed over for a brother who is just like him, only less intelligent. So that knocks out his two main sources of resentment and crazyeyes right there, which leaves him with...basically, with the really loldorable trolly friendship he has with Thor at the beginning of the movie. And we can work with that!
...IDK, I think about this a lot.)

And regarding the union thing from the thread above, you've read

Yyyyyyy, I have! And you just reminded me to go back and bookmark it, because, yes.

OH GOD I WANT THIS SO BAD.
IA with you on your Loki thoughts - my main thing about him is that he is SO tragic, but that doesn't make him less fucked up, or what he does LESS WRONG, and the way that Hiddleston plays him (and that Branagh directed him in the first one) is so very Shakespearean tragic flawed hero of a tragedy who HANDLES THINGS BADLY and then DIES HAVING LOST EVERYTHING. Which is AWFUL, but I don't really know how you go about FIXING that within canon. It's sort of HIS WHOLE DEAL, you know? And I DO think that Loki doesn't really think that Earth matters, or that humans matter, no matter how nifty their superpowers are, because hi DEMIGOD. Which is both understandable and yet NOT COOL, especially since he clearly ONLY goes after Earth specifically because it'll hurt Thor, and that's a lot of collateral damage for a family drama.
He's never going to get to be one of the Avengers like Thor is (although Thor is, along with Steve, the most fish out of water of them all in that situation, really), because the only reason Thor is part of it is because of his existence-altering experience ON EARTH. They both went through shit because of Odin (let's be honest) and Loki got the shaft, big time, and also he's too clever for his own good to actually deal WELL with that. I am actually REALLY curious about what they do with him in Thor II, after having been so thoroughly beaten and humiliated (as demonstrated by the helpful gag! THANKS, JOSS).
In conclusion: being the second son to a god-king is hard under the best of circumstances, which these were not, and this is what you get, Odin. LOOK AT WHAT YOU DID.

RIGHT? The two of them growing up together and trolling the fuck out of each other but without that undertone of Loki being the-same-but-less-than (because you know it totally KILLED him that Odin picked Thor for his heir, given what he knew at the time), and being kind of dubious about this whole 'conjugal relations' thing but ultimately being a really awesome team and defeating evil with their complementary skillsets! and then boning.
Y, I super agree with you - Loki is tragic, and I sympathize with his emotions! ...but not his decisions. He really doesn't ever believe that ANYBODY is as valid of a person as he is, and especially not earthlings, which...yeah, I mean, dialogue rings true! but that doesn't make me want to ship him with anybody on the Avengers, kthnxbai.
In conclusion, our opinions are great and we should feel great! And the rest of the Avengers movies should come out ASAP so that I can spend all of my time at the theater / rolling around on the floor with my feelings.

But I 100% want to read the fic where Loki's been raised to be Thor's future husband or w/e. ESPECIALLY IF THERE IS WEIRD 'BUT WE GREW UP TOGETHER" SORT OF TENSION!
no subject
and YYYYYYY power-behind-the-throne / political alliance spouse Loki! Helping Thor run the world by being sneaky in a useful way! And the two of them getting used to the idea of an alliance, but still having a really hard time with the sexy bits, because they grew up together, so they're probably not supposed to want to bang, except for how they super do. ALL OF THE FIC, GIVE IT TO ME.

I approve.

(THOR THOR THOR)
FUCKING GET OVER IT. YOUR PARENTS LOVE YOU ANYWAY.
also natasha needs her own movie. clint can be in it, if they bang

It was kind of weird watching it after I saw Avengers and also read a ton of fic--it was like I was watching an awesome prequel to the fic and it was kind of sad, because there were points in Thor where Loki could have made a different decision and not gone down the path of getting in over his head with the creepy aliens.
I do agree with you about the actions that Loki chooses to take being the important part, though. He's kind of a cupcake but the kind that I just want to yell NO LOKI DON'T DO IT YOU IDIOT at. And I am still kind of holding out for redemption for him through the power of friendship.
All of your stories sound awesome and I want to read them. Steve Rogers goes into a supermarket for the first time! The produce section, OH MY GOD, the produce section.
How many possible pairings/groups are there in the Avengers mansion? Math is hard. 56? No, crap, I forgot Pepper and Jane and what the hell, Darcy. LOTS. Nine people = 36 pairings. I'd read it.

Steve in a supermarket! On public transit! Even just seeing suburbia for the first time, since, wow, talk about a shift in lifestyle. Other highlights: ATMs, the Barbie doll, Alaska, Hawai'i, facebook, the blogosphere, and LASERS. Not to mention the distinct lack of flying cars - dude saw Howard Stark with his flying car before he even got all buff-ified, and you just know he's going to give Tony shit for still not having managed it.
(To which Tony is like, come on, I built a flying suit, that's totally way cooler, and Steve just shakes his head and demands a flying car. Which Tony then builds. Because he's ridiculous.)
